Our story

A regional coordination platform

African Centre for Health Workforce Initiative and Transformation (ACHWIT) is a non-profit, non-political organisation incorporated in Kenya in 2026 as a Company Limited by Guarantee under the Companies Act, 2015, whose mission is to convene and develop the health workforce through policy and practice, migration and mobility, workforce education, and workforce wellbeing, while fostering innovation, research, strategic partnerships and advocacy to strengthen health systems and promote equitable, sustainable and quality health outcomes in Africa.

Legal status

Non-profit, non-political organisation. Incorporated in Kenya in 2026 as a Company Limited by Guarantee under the Companies Act, 2015 (Kenya).

Mission

To convene and develop the health workforce through policy and practice, migration and mobility, workforce education, and workforce wellbeing, while fostering innovation, research, strategic partnerships and advocacy to strengthen health systems and promote equitable, sustainable and quality health outcomes in Africa.

To be the largest regional health workforce convenor and coordination hub for stakeholder engagement, policy alignment and implementation support.

Why ACHWIT exists

Africa faces a projected shortfall of 6.1 million workers by 2030. Closing that gap requires coordinated policy, quality education pathways, ethical mobility frameworks, and sustained investment in the wellbeing of health workers.

ACHWIT partners with Kenya’s Ministry of Health, State Department for Medical Services, and continental stakeholders. The secretariat is based at Shelter Arique Building, Mamlaka Road, Nairobi.

Phase I (November 2025 – April 2026)

Phase I completed conceptualization, institutional establishment and programmatic development. All 12 planned deliverables were delivered on time across four workstreams. Founding strategic partner: Johnson & Johnson — Nurse Midwife Alliance.

Apr 2026

Inaugural Stakeholder Convention

50+ delegates from six stakeholder groups convened at Ngong Hills Hotel (1–2 April 2026) under the theme “Positioning Africa’s Health Workforce for Sustainable Development.” Seven consensus resolutions adopted; four milestones launched including the Wellbeing Study, website, and Health Workforce Wellbeing Day. Keynote: PS Medical Services Dr. Fredrick Ouma Oluga, OGW. Founding support: Johnson & Johnson Nurse Midwife Alliance.

Multi-country Health Workforce Wellbeing Study

Phase I completed a multi-country baseline reaching 4,040 health workers across Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana — generating evidence for policy dialogue and continental wellbeing programming.

Phase I complete — 12/12 deliverables

All twelve planned Phase I deliverables completed on time across four workstreams (Nov 2025–Apr 2026), with eleven formal reference documents issued and archived. Mandate: conceptualization, institutional establishment, and programmatic development.

At Afya House, ACHWIT leadership presented progress to Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga on health workforce development, institutional capacity and UHC-aligned priorities.

MOUs on innovation and blood systems

ACHWIT signed Memoranda of Understanding with Thatcher X (drone logistics), Afritel Solutions (digital health technology) and Kenyan By Blood Foundation to strengthen coordinated healthcare delivery and an integrated blood ecosystem in Kenya.
